Dr. Romanelli Performs New Technique for Irreparable Rotator Cuff Tears.
The superior capsule reconstruction is a treatment option for massive, irreparable rotator cuff tears. Treatment goals of such tears are to reduce pain, restore shoulder function and delay the need for reverse shoulder replacements.
Superior capsule reconstruction (SCR) is a promising alternative treatment. The technique is done arthroscopically using a thick human skin graft allograft and absorbable suture anchors from the glenoid (socket) to the humerus (ball). The allograft is strong and safe and has been used previously for revision rotator cuff repair.
Superior capsule reconstruction theoretically improves function by re-centering the humeral head (ball) within the glenoid (socket) and improving shoulder motion. It allows the surrounding shoulder muscles and remaining cuff to function more effectively.
Results & Recovery
Nationally authors have quoted early results with pain relief that have been dramatic. Patients are typically immobilized in an abduction pillow for 6 weeks postoperatively. Full passive range of motion is started at approximately 4-6 weeks, with active motion at 6-8 weeks and strengthening at 8-12 weeks depending on the patient. Total time is 4-6 months of therapy. Patient selection is very important and long-term benefits need to be investigated in further clinical trials.
